USA: Republicans challenge Biden over suspension of arms sales to Israel

Representatives of the US Republican Party reacted harshly to US press reports that the President’s administration Joe Biden has suspended the delivery of around 3,500 bombs to the Israeli armed forces to avert an invasion of the southern Gaza town of Rafah. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul and Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers released a joint statement yesterday saying they were “appalled” by the Biden administration’s decision to “deliver to release important weapons to Israel.” The two MPs accused the presidential administration of weakening Israel’s security. “Moreover, this disastrous policy decision was made secretly and deliberately hidden from Congress and the American people,” the two Republicans accused Biden of “a strategic mistake that raises questions about our ‘unwavering support’ as allies.”

The arms shipments to Israel that U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration halted last week include a total of 1,800 2-pound bombs (about 900 kilograms) and 1,700 500-pound bombs (about 226 kilograms). An anonymous “senior official” of the US federal government reported this to the information site “Axios”. As Axios recalls, the Biden administration’s unprecedented decision was aimed at signaling Washington’s opposition to an Israeli invasion of Rafah, where over a million Palestinian civilians have sought refuge from Israeli bombings of Gaza in recent months. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided to continue the offensive anyway, which, according to White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby, “has not yet reached the dimensions, scope, duration and purpose of a major land operation.” However, Kirby acknowledged that Israeli forces have effectively launched an offensive against the southern Gaza city and reiterated that the White House made the decision to attack the city by “considering the risks to the 1st World War.” .5 million people increased”, “not supported people who found refuge there.”
