Stabbing in Manhattan subway: Man killed in attack in station, suspect at large

The search for the stabber who killed a man at a train station on Friday afternoon is still ongoing in Manhattan.

According to police, 40-year-old Johnny Medina of West 172nd Street was fatally attacked at the 175th Street station on the A line in Washington Heights at around 5:55 p.m. on June 21.

Officials of the 33rd District and when NYPD Transit District 3 responded to a 911 call about the attack, Medina was found on the station’s mezzanine with multiple stab wounds to her upper body.

Police believe the victim and his attacker knew each other, but the motive is still under investigation.

In a statement, MTA communications director Tim Minton said the attack stemmed from an incident that began on the street and ended in the station.

“This was a senseless attack that extended from the street to the subway, and we offer our full cooperation in the investigation and are confident that the NYPD will quickly identify and arrest the perpetrator,” Minton said (h/t WABC-TV).

Emergency services took Medina to Harlem Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

As of June 16, only one homicide had been recorded in the 33rd Precinct, one fewer than the two recorded by the same time in 2023, according to the latest CompStat report. Transit crime has also declined in the dispatch center, with only five incidents reported in the transit area, compared to seven at the same time last year.

So far, no arrests have been made in the ongoing investigation, police said.
