More than 30 people arrested during Operation Safe Summer – The Champion Newspaper | 404-373-7779

A multi-jurisdictional task force made 38 arrests for various felonies and misdemeanors on June 4 and 5 as part of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office’s Operation Safe Summer 2024.

Led by officers from the sheriff’s office’s Criminal Justice Field Operations Division and Uniform Division, the response teams also included special units from the Clayton, Fulton, Henry and Rockdale county sheriff’s offices, officials said.

Local agencies also participated in the task force’s efforts, including the DeKalb County Marshals Office, Stone Mountain Police Department, DeKalb County State Court Probation Office and DeKalb Community Supervision.

This year, the task force made 277 arrest attempts on warrants, resulting in 38 arrests. Those arrested were then taken to the DeKalb County Jail in Decatur without incident, officials said.

The charges included aggravated assault with a weapon, negligent homicide, assault and domestic violence, theft by taking, terroristic threats, trespassing, robbery and probation violation, officials said.

“These arrests mean that a significant number of suspected offenders are now off the streets,” said DeKalb County Sheriff Melody Maddox. “We are pleased with these results and appreciate the involvement of our partner agencies. Together, we can significantly reduce crime in our communities. The citizens of DeKalb are safer thanks to this operation.”

During Operation Safe Summer last year, Maddox explained that a growing backlog of active, outstanding warrants in DeKalb County led to the creation of the multi-jurisdictional task force.
