Avianca suspends the Bogotá-Havana route due to operational problems: Impact on flight connections in Latin America

Due to operational problems at the airport, Avianca is temporarily suspending the connection between Bogotá and Havana

Avianca, one of Latin America’s largest airlines, has announced the temporary suspension of its route between Bogotá and Havana. The decision was made due to operational difficulties at the José Martí International Airport in the Cuban capital, the company said.

While Avianca has not yet given a specific date for resuming flights to the island, it has assured affected passengers that refunds will be processed accordingly. The airline has also advised customers to update their contact details to facilitate communication if necessary.

This move by Avianca comes after other airlines also recently suspended operations to Havana. Aerolíneas Argentinas canceled its route via Cancún, Wingo suspended flights from Medellín and Boliviana de Aviación suspended operations from Santa Cruz de la Sierra.

In a related development, Cubana de Aviación also faced challenges in May when it suspended its regular flights between Havana, Cayo Coco and Buenos Aires after 39 years of continuous operation. The airline cited the refusal of fuel suppliers in Argentina, which coincided with a change of government in that country.

The Cuban Foreign Ministry confirmed that Cubana de Aviación is exploring various options with the Argentine civil aviation authorities to maintain its licensed operations. The operational problems at José Martí Airport have caused problems for international airlines and affected air connections between Cuba and several other Latin American countries.
