Jackson Mayor Announces Firing of City Employee Following Embezzlement Investigation

A city of Jackson employee has been terminated from his job following an embezzlement investigation. According to Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba, the unnamed employee allegedly committed several types of fraud that directly impacted former city employees who use the city’s insurance plan. The mayor said the embezzlement was discovered by Toya Martin, the city’s human resources director. The mayor said city council members were notified. The mayor called the embezzlement disgraceful. “The position was used to take advantage of people,” Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba said. The mayor is asking anyone who may have been affected by the embezzlement to call the city’s office at 601-960-1953. The case has been turned over to Jackson police, the attorney general’s office and the state auditor’s office.

The mayor described the embezzlement as shameful.

“The position was exploited to take advantage of the people,” said Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba.

The mayor asks anyone who may be affected by the embezzlement to call the city office at 601-960-1953.

The case was referred to the Jackson Police Department, the Attorney General’s Office and the Comptroller’s Office.
