More heat and humidity expected at the beginning of the week

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – The hot and humid conditions continue today! This morning there will be lots of clouds, mild temperatures and light winds. During the afternoon, skies will become partly cloudy, an east wind will blow around 5 to 10 mph and temperatures will become hot. Highs will rise to the upper 90s with some humidity factor. Scattered rain and thunderstorms are possible today.

This evening the clouds will thicken and the lows will remain mild, at 21 degrees. An easterly wind will blow at around 8 km/h and the humidity will remain.

A high pressure system will approach the region on Tuesday, so the chance of rain will be very, very low until mid-week.

In fact, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday will be cloudy with some sunshine. The maximum temperature in the afternoon will be between 35 and 40 degrees. The wind will be around 8 km/h and will decrease at night. The minimum temperatures during this period will be 21 degrees, in some places even 18 degrees.

The ridge of high pressure is beginning to dissipate somewhat and tropical moisture will move into the region on Friday, meaning the chance of rain will increase again this weekend.

Currently, the chance of rain is isolated and scattered on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Highs for the end of the week and the first weekend of summer will be around 35 degrees, with lows around 21 degrees.

Speaking of the tropics, the National Hurricane Center is monitoring two areas for potential development over the next 7 days. One area in the Bay of Campeche has a high chance of development over the next week as it is being driven by tracks into Mexico and southern Texas. Another area north of the Bahamas has a low chance of development over the next week. The first two names on the list for the 2024 tropical season are Alberto and Beryl. We’ll be watching them closely as we are now officially in hurricane season.

Quick note: The first day of summer is Thursday! The summer solstice occurs at 3:50 p.m. Central Time. That means June 20th will have the most daylight hours of the year…about 14 hours. Starting Thursday, daylight hours will start to get shorter as we move into winter and the second half of the year.
