One injured, one accused after shooting and assault in Smiths Station – CNAW 2 with Colin Scroggins

Lee County officials are investigating a shooting that occurred overnight in the city of Smiths Station.

Officers, along with EAMC ETS, Smiths Station Fire, and a rescue unit, were called to a report of shots fired and an unresponsive man on a dirt road off of 430 Lee Road near the 15000 block of US Highway 280 East, just yards from the city’s Fire Station 1, at approximately 12:19 a.m. on Friday, June 7, 2024.

According to Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones, officers discovered a 40-year-old victim who had not been shot, but had been struck in the head with a handgun until he was unconscious. He also appeared to have minor cuts and bruises on his face, neck and head. The victim was transported to Piedmont Columbus Regional Midtown Campus in critical condition.

Witnesses at the scene reported that the victim and his uncle by marriage, 46-year-old Jamey Scott Dillard of Smiths Station, were involved in an argument when a firearm was brandished, resulting in the victim being struck with a pistol, officials said.

Dillard was transported to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office where he was arrested and charged with first degree assault. He is being held in the Lee County Jail on $50,000.00 bail.
