Greg Rutherford is ‘shaken’ after narrowly avoiding injury following a strange incident at home

Greg Rutherford has revealed that he and his family narrowly escaped injury following a strange incident at their home.

The 37-year-old former Olympian took to Instagram to vent his trauma after a skylight exploded, sending shards of glass crashing onto the sofa and the area around him, where his children had been just minutes earlier.

Rutherford, who has children Milo (8), Rex (5) and Daphne (2) with his fiancée Susie Verrill, uploaded a video showing the aftermath and explained: “One of the most horrific experiences – one of our skylights up here just exploded.”

“I was literally standing in the kitchen looking at the TV on the wall when suddenly – boom! – and shards of glass flew everywhere.”

He recalls how close Milo, the eldest child, was to getting away, saying: “I kid you not, two minutes ago Milo was down here doing school work and I said, ‘It’s a beautiful day, get out on deck, buddy.'”

“Thank God I did that, otherwise I can’t imagine what would have happened.”

The former Dancing On Ice contestant then panned the camera upwards towards the destroyed skylight as he continued to reflect on the cause of the events.

“I have no idea if it was the sun that heated it up and it happened, or if something like that happens. I can’t explain to you how horrible this is…” he mused.

“I’ve been going in and out today cleaning up. I’ve passed by here 50 times in the last half hour.

“I don’t know. What a terrible event,” he concluded.
