State trooper suspended after shooting | Latest from WDEL News

A Smyrna man is in the hospital and a police officer is on leave following a shooting Friday night.

According to state police, the patrol officer was called to a home on Ferris Road around 9:20 p.m. Friday for a report of a suicidal man with a gun.

Two teenagers had seen the man walking around with the gun and the man reportedly told the teenagers he wanted them to kill him.

The teens convinced the man, a 36-year-old who had recently been issued a Smyrna Police Department Gold Alert, to put down the gun, and one of the teens removed the magazine from the gun. However, when the officer arrived, the man picked up the gun and magazine, acting suspiciously and hiding one of his hands.

The man put the magazine back in the gun and turned to face the police officer who shot him.

He is in stable condition and currently hospitalized. He is in the custody of the Department of Corrections on charges of aggravated menacing and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. According to department policy, an officer involved in a shooting is placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
