Oklahoma man faces criminal charges for alleged aggression while driving

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – The Oklahoma County District Attorney’s Office has filed charges against an Oklahoma City man accused of intentionally scratching the paint on a woman’s car following a road rage incident.

According to court documents, the incident occurred on May 11. They say the victim and the suspect, Carter Cox, were upset with each other’s driving and Cox followed the victim into a Costco parking lot off Memorial Road and Western Avenue.

“A woman was running zigzagging through the parking lot,” said Lexi Koch, who witnessed the incident. “I heard the man yelling and cursing at her and calling her all kinds of profanities. I got out of my car and the woman just clung to me. She was shaking and scared.”

According to documents, the victim told police that Cox eventually got back into his vehicle and drove extremely close to her vehicle before allegedly leaning out the driver’s window and scratching the paint of her car with a metal object.

“The paint actually looked like it had just been peeled off,” said Koch. “When you scratch something, there are these little pearls on it.”

According to the documents, at least two witnesses observed the damage to the car before the suspect fled the scene at high speed.

Documents indicate that the victim managed to take photos of the suspect, and Oklahoma City police have released those photos to the media to help locate him.

According to the documents, police were also able to use several clues and use flock cameras to obtain the license plate number of Cox’s vehicle.

The victim told police she received an estimate of $4,000 to $6,000 to repaint her vehicle. Documents noted that the scratches on the 2023 vehicle were very noticeable and deep.

The documents also note that Cox agreed to a phone interview with police. According to the documents, Cox admitted to being involved in an altercation with the victim, but when asked about the damage, he said he knew better than to admit to anything.

News 4 staff stopped by an address listed in court documents as Cox’s, but were told he had been harassed enough and did not want to talk about the incident any more.

Koch said that although she did not know how the situation would develop, she would intervene at any time.

“I couldn’t just let that happen,” Koch said. “You know, I just can’t stand by and do nothing.”

Cox was charged with malicious damage to property, which would be a felony if convicted.
