The equestrian community mourns the loss of one of its own.

Georgie Campbell died on May 26 after falling from her horse during competition at the Bicton International Horse Trials in southwest England. She was 37 years old.

“Medics attended the scene immediately after her fall at obstacle 5b but unfortunately she could not be saved,” British Eventing, the sport’s national governing body in the UK, said in a statement the same day. “The horse, Global Quest, was examined by on-site vets and returned to the stable and is uninjured.”

The organization concluded its announcement by saying, “To respect the family’s privacy during this extremely difficult and sad time, no further details will be released.”

Campbell was an excellent rider and competed in more than 200 competitions, the BBC reported. Her husband, Jessie Campbell, is also an eventer and will compete for New Zealand at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The couple founded Team Campbell Eventing together. On their joint Instagram account, they presented their riding career with videos, photos and updates from competitions.

Less than three weeks before the incident, they posted a video of her training with Global Quest. The caption, dated May 5, read, “Global Quest at her best,” with a starstruck emoji.

Campbell has also praised the horse for other rides. In October, she shared several pictures of the 11-year-old animal and wrote: “Great week with Global Quest doing what he does best – flying around in the XC and giving me a first-class ride.”

“After suffering an injury at the beginning of the year and needing some rest, we were a little lacking in competition practice, which was noticeable in dressage and show jumping,” she explained, “but it was so nice to have him so fit and well again.”
