Houston Rockets’ Jalen Green listed as top trade asset

Houston Rockets guard Jalen Green has had many ups and downs in his career.

In his first season alongside Fred VanVleet in the backcourt, Green struggled to find his footing, leading to one of the worst stretches of his career. The situation got so bad that he was the focus of trade rumors right before the February deadline. After the deadline, Green then broke down in tears, proving why he was taken second overall and showing the kind of franchise guard potential he had from G League Ignite.

But with the Rockets still missing the playoffs, Green’s name has reappeared in the rumors. Bleacher Report ranked Green as the second-largest trade asset on the open market.

“Green’s name surfaced in the rumor mill in March. Although much of it was based on speculation, the the buzz around him at the trade deadline had real legs,” Bleacher Report writes. “Plus, if the Rockets are interested in Donovan Mitchell — as The Athletic’s Kelly Iko reported — it’s hard to imagine a scenario in which they catch such a big fish without using Green as trade bait.”

The Rockets will always be the subject of star trade rumors because they have a glut of first-round picks and can offer one of the best deals for any big-name player. However, the Rockets are still going to give Green at least one more season to prove he should stay with the team long term.

The Rockets will likely negotiate an extension with Green this offseason given he is eligible, but he will still be the marquee player leaving Houston in any significant trade scenario. That being said, Houston still has a lot of confidence in the 22-year-old, and a trade involving him this summer is highly unlikely.
