Man uses voice-changing app to impersonate woman, rapes 7 people in MP | India News

BHOPAL: In a gruesome case of serial rape in MP’s Sidhi district, a 30-year-old man abused at least seven tribal girls by posing as a teacher using a voice-changing app and luring them into his trap. On the directions of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, a nine-member SIT was set up on Saturday to investigate the crime and submit a report within seven days.

The accused, Brajesh Prajapati, preyed on girls eligible for SC/ST scholarships. He used the app to disguise his voice, pose as “Archana Madam” and ask the victims to meet “her” to resolve an issue with their scholarship application, police said. After raping the girls, he stole their mobile phones so that they could not call for help.

So far, police have recovered 16 mobile phones from his possession, but complaints have been received from four of the survivors. “One girl went to meet him with a minor and he raped both of them,” Sidhi SP Ravindra Verma told TOI. The six others are in college and are between 19 and 20 years old.

Prajapati is unemployed. His rape spree began in April this year, but the survivors were too scared to file a complaint, police said. On May 16, a student finally gathered her courage and went to Majhauli police station (600 km from Bhopal) to file a complaint of assault.

The survivor claimed that on May 13, she received a call from a certain ‘Archana Ma’am’ who informed her that her scholarship was blocked as her signature was missing on a document. She was asked to meet her at a deserted place. When she reached there, she received another call from the ‘ma’am’ who said that she had sent her son to pick her up. A man came on a motorcycle and drove her to a deserted place where he raped her and snatched her phone, the survivor said in her complaint.

The police realised that an app was being used and sought the help of cyber experts to track down Prajapati. He was arrested the same night, but the police did not release details of the case until Saturday. Prajapati is in judicial custody.

“So far, four cases have been registered against the accused and there are five survivors (including the minor). During interrogation, the accused has admitted to raping seven girls so far. The details of the other two are being verified. There could be more victims,” SP Verma told TOI. Police have spoken to five of the survivors. “All of them have complained of rape. No case of gang rape has been reported so far,” the SP added. CM Yadav said, “The incident of misbehaviour with tribal students in Sidhi on the pretext of scholarship has come to our attention. The accused has been arrested. People who do such reprehensible work are enemies of the society. Strict action will be taken against the accused.”
