Charles County man shot to death at weekend car meet

DISTRICT HEIGHTS, MD. – The Prince George’s County Police Department Homicide Unit is actively investigating a fatal shooting that occurred in a motorcade early Sunday morning. The victim is 26-year-old John Phipps of Waldorf. A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment in this case.

On May 19, 2024, at approximately 1:45 a.m., officers responded to the parking lot of a shopping center in the 6400 block of Marlboro Pike. The victim was in a vehicle and suffered gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at a hospital a short time later. A second adult man was also shot. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Investigators are working to identify the suspect(s) and motive.

“These car meets are a real concern for law enforcement both in our region and across the country. When the department receives concrete, credible information, the agency plans accordingly and dedicates resources to either prevent or resolve the collection. In addition, follow-up investigations are carried out and appropriate penalties are imposed for violations of the law. As this case makes clear, these gatherings can become violent. We don’t want anyone to get hurt or killed. “The PGPD has worked with legislators to strengthen the laws and penalties associated with these car meetings and will continue to do so,” said Chief Malik Aziz.
