Consumer Alert: Rochester earns the title of second clumsiest city in America

The News10NBC team provides breaking news, traffic and weather.

ROCHESTER, NY – This consumer alert takes a look at one of the most expensive things you carry with you every day: your cell phone. Rochester has made it to the top of an unflattering list. We are the second raggedest city in America.

Asurion, a cell phone and expensive technology insurance company, examined the number of broken cell phone claims per capita and the cities with the most personal injury lawyers and orthopedic surgeons per capita.

Here is the top 10 list of the most awkward cities.

  1. New Orleans
  2. Rochester, NY
  3. Raleigh, NC
  4. Atlanta, GA
  5. Fresno, California
  6. Birmingham, AL
  7. Richmond, VA
  8. Jacksonville, FL
  9. Hartford, CT
  10. Louisville, Ky

Asurion’s study found that the average person experiences about 140 moments of so-called phone danger every year. We’ve all been through this. Your phone slips from your hand and lands face down on the concrete. And you hold your breath as you pick it up, hoping against hope that the screen isn’t cracked. The study revealed some interesting connections. The top 10 clumsiest cities had a population with the highest percentage of children ages 18 and under. Additionally, cities with the most non-drinkers had the fewest clumsy incidents.

That’s why I spoke to an expert from AT&T about this study and she says there’s one place you should never take your phone.

“Keep it as far away from the bathroom as possible,” said Keron Incarnato, vice president and general manager of Northeast States for AT&T. “I can’t tell you how many customers I have helped over the years who have had this unfortunate toilet bowl situation. But I’m telling you, if you’re the kind of person who can’t miss that text message even during a bathroom break, you might want to look into getting a smartwatch.”

She says with a smartwatch you can transfer your text messages to your watch without putting your phone at risk. She also says that getting a screen protector is a necessity because broken displays are the most common complaint, accounting for about 30 percent of all complaints.

And she suggests you invest in earbuds so you don’t have to hold the phone to answer the call. Finally, always keep your phone in a good protective case.
