Uber is investigating an incident in which a woman was sexually assaulted and robbed at gunpoint in Cape Town

  • “What has been described is completely unacceptable,” an Uber spokesman said on Sunday.

Email giant Uber is investigating an incident in which a woman in Cape Town was allegedly sexually assaulted in one of its vehicles, robbed at gunpoint and driven around for hours.

The incident occurred Friday evening at approximately 9:25 p.m., Capt. Aubrey Morwenyane, Bellville Police station speaker confirmed earlier.

“WWhat has been described is completely unacceptable,an Uber spokesman said on Sunday.

“WWe extend our deepest condolences to the victim because no one should ever have to experience such a tragedy. The safety of all passengers and drivers using the Uber app is our top priority.”

The woman, 21, requested an Uber from her workplace in Bellville on Friday evening. The driver told her to sit in the back seat.

“WWhile she was driving, another man came out of the trunk of the vehicle and sat next to her. He then removed the gun and pointed it at her.Morwenyane said.

“HShe demanded all of her belongings, including her laptop, cell phone and work scanner.”

The woman was then sexually abused by the robber.

The couple then forced the woman to call her family and ask for money.

When there was no answer, she was canceled On the side of the road.

Emre Uygen, chairman of the Bellville Community Policing Forum, said the woman was canceled in Kraaifontein.

“I strongly condemn the terrible incident of yesterday in which a young woman was robbed and sexually abused,he said.

“WWe call on Bellville SAPS detectives to work tirelessly and expeditiously to arrest the suspects and bring them to justice.”

After the incident, reports on social media and from Uygen named two different email companies the woman used. However, Morwenyane said it was an Uber.
