UN halves estimates of number of women and children killed in Gaza

According to UN data released on May 6 and 8, the United Nations appears to have halved the estimated number of women and children killed in Gaza.

The United Nations released the death toll reported by the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza or the government media office in Gaza and Israeli authorities.

The UN issued a disclaimer under the data: “The UN has not been able to produce independent, comprehensive and verified casualty figures.”

On May 8, the United Nations released data showing that 34,844 people were killed, including 4,959 women and 7,797 children.

The new figures showed the number of identified deaths as of April 30 totaled 24,686 people; The new data also stated that 10,006 men and 1,924 elderly people were killed.

The United Nations also highlighted that the majority of identified fatalities were men (40%), while children (32%) and women (20%) were affected.

Questions about data accuracy

This came after months of accusations from leading statisticians that the figures provided by Gaza authorities could not possibly be accurate.

The Washington Institute for Near East Policy released a report in January that showed major discrepancies in death reports. They concluded that such discrepancies were most likely caused by manipulation.

Professor Abraham Wyner also told it Tablet Magazine that the death rate was very unnatural and increased far too regularly.

He claimed that deaths in war should be irregular because the intensity of war was irregular, but the death toll increased by 270 plus or minus 15%, which he said was statistically impossible.
