Driver taken into custody after hit-and-run in Scarborough

According to police, a cyclist was hit and taken to hospital with minor injuries.

SCARBOROUGH, Maine – A Rumford man is in custody after allegedly hitting several vehicles and leading police on a chase in the Scarborough area Saturday afternoon.

Shortly before 4:30 p.m., the Scarborough Emergency Communications Center received a report of a hit-and-run crash on Gorham Road, also known as Route 114, near Mussey Road, according to a news release from the Scarborough Police Department.

Officers observed the suspect’s vehicle traveling through the intersection of Gorham Road and Route 1 at a high rate of speed, but were unable to stop it.

The vehicle then “appeared to intentionally attempt to ram vehicles on Black Point Road,” striking a vehicle in the area of ​​Highland Avenue, a bicyclist and another vehicle before stopping, police said. The vehicle caught fire after coming to a stop, and flames spread to a telephone pole and nearby brush. The fire was extinguished by the Scarborough Fire Department.

Police identified the driver of the suspect vehicle as 63-year-old Lyndon Leonard of Rumford and said he allegedly resisted arrest and assaulted officers before being taken into custody.

Leonard is accused of the following:

  • Five cases of serious bodily harm
  • Two cases of serious damage to property
  • Serious escape from an officer
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol with injury
  • negligence
  • Criminal mischief
  • Three cases of violations of release conditions
  • Criminal speed
  • Refusal to submit to arrest or detention
  • attack
  • Leaving the scene of a car accident
  • Failure to provide the correct name and date of birth
  • Operating without a license

The cyclist who was hit was taken to Maine Medical Center with minor injuries, police said. All occupants of the vehicle were reportedly uninjured.
