Reactions of world leaders, Donald Trump and the UN to the attack on Majdal Shams

International politicians have reacted to Hezbollah’s rocket attack on the Druze village of Majdal Shams in northern Israel on Saturday. The White House described the attack, which killed 12 people, including children, on a soccer field, as “horrific.”

“Our support for Israel’s security is rock solid and unwavering against all Iranian-backed terrorist groups, including Lebanon’s Hezbollah,” a White House National Security Council spokesman said in a statement.

Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “We are appalled by the rocket attack on a soccer field in Majdal Shams that killed more than ten innocent people and injured many more, mostly children. We condemn this attack in the strongest possible terms and express our condolences to the families of the victims and the Druze community.”

She also reiterated Canada’s call on Iran and its proxies to refrain from destabilising the region and expressed concern about further escalation as a result of the attack.

Former President Donald Trump also mentioned the attack when he spoke at a Bitcoin event in Nashville.

“We just heard that Israel was heavily attacked – apparently by Hezbollah,” he said.

“They must not do this. What they have done is terrible. So God bless everybody. We must not allow this to continue and we wish them luck. It is a terrible thing.”

He later posted on his social media account Truth Social: “Today’s attack on Israel must not be forgotten.”

At a rally in Minnesota on Sunday, he said: “Our condolences go out to the families of the murdered children. No parent should have to suffer the loss of a child at the hands of terrorists.”

Escalation in the region

Tor Wennesland, the UN peace envoy for the Middle East, condemned the “heinous rocket attack on the Druze town of Majdal Shams”, adding that it is children who continue to “bear the burden of the horrific violence ravaging the region”.

He called for “maximum restraint” and said missile launches over the Blue Line must “cease immediately.”

“The Middle East is on the brink; the world and the region cannot afford another open conflict,” he added.
