Oakland youth rowing team spooked by gunfire on Sacramento River – NBC Bay Area

Police are investigating after shots were fired near a group of teenage rowers in the Sacramento area.

The incident occurred about two weeks ago on the Sacramento River.

A group of Oakland Strokes youths were on the boat at the time of the incident.

East Bay parent Fred Ackerman shared video of the incident from another parent to NBC Bay Area. He said his son was rowing the boat when the shooting happened.

“To be in this situation and see my child being shot is terrible,” he said. “It is absolutely horrific and what I have experienced pales in comparison to what countless families have experienced.”

Ackerman added that the teenagers on the boat thought it was just a joke and that maybe someone had fired a pellet gun. But when they watched the video again and realized it was real gunshots, they were shocked and immediately called the police.

Ackerman said it was an incident that made him realize the U.S. may have a problem with guns.

“It’s pretty clear to me that our children are less safe when they have more guns. “As parents, our most important job is to keep your children safe,” he said. “So I’m trying to keep my kids safe, I’m trying to encourage others to really think about how we can keep all of our kids safe.”

No injuries were reported.

West Sacramento police confirmed to NBC Bay Area on Thursday that they searched the area for possible suspects and evidence but found nothing.

The incident is under investigation.
