Suspects arrested in South Beach fireworks incident, charged with multiple crimes | News

During the search, evidence was discovered that convincingly supports the charges brought against both suspects for multiple serious crimes.

Megan Warner, 32, and Levi Mills, 33, were both arrested and held in the Del Norte County Jail.

Warner and Mills will be charged with the following counts at their arraignment on Monday, July 15: possession of illegal explosives, sale/use of dangerous fireworks, intentional cruelty to a child, sale/use of unclassified fireworks, Possession of fireworks without permission, setting off/etc. fireworks: risk of injury, obstruction/resistance to public officials (changed)

Suspect Mills posted $50,000 bail on Sunday, July 14. He is due in court on August 23 to enter a guilty plea. On Monday, suspect Warner stated that she is able and willing to post the $50,000, but due to two unrelated warrants, the sheriff will continue to hold her in custody until those warrants are cleared.

Sheriff Garrett Scott issued the following statement: “Transparency is and will continue to be a priority at the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office. I have remained quiet on this matter to protect the integrity of this investigation and to prevent evidence from being destroyed. My prayers are with our three-year-old victim (William Lupan) and all the victims can recover from this tragedy. The negligence shown by the suspects in this case is totally unacceptable. I commend the emergency responders, rescue workers, firefighters and police officers who responded to this incident and thank the many people who supported our employees and I thank law enforcement for their efforts. The public’s support is so important.

A total of 14 victims were found and taken to Sutter Coast Hospital. Many more were injured and refused medical care at the hospital, but were treated by emergency responders on the scene for burns, cuts, and debris from the explosion. The arrested suspects fled South Beach after the illegal fireworks disappeared from the scene.
