Former Neshaminy Kids Club employee sexually abused boys he met in the program

A Bristol Township man has admitted to sexually abusing seven boys. The abuse began nearly 25 years ago when he was employed in a school-based after-school program.

At his court hearing on Monday, 42-year-old Gerald Spoto pleaded guilty to several counts of sexual abuse of children. Seven victims were involved, all but one of whom are now adults.

Bucks County District Court Judge Jeffrey Finley postponed sentencing for 90 days so Spoto can undergo a psychological evaluation to determine whether he is a sexually violent predator, which requires lifetime registration as a sex offender.

Spoto has been in the Bucks County Correctional Center since his arrest in December. He is accused of molesting four boys he met between 2000 and 2004 while working for the Neshaminy Kids Club, a program at the county’s elementary schools.

The parents of some of the victims also hired Spoto as a babysitter, authorities said. The attacks took place when the victims were between 7 and 13 years old, authorities said.

The assaults occurred mostly at a Middletown home, where Spoto was living with his mother at the time, and later at his home in Bristol Township, according to police. The probable cause affidavit found no evidence that assaults occurred at the schools where the Kids Club was located.

Middletown Township police filed the charges last year after investigators investigated two dormant complaints of sexual assault of minors from 2013 and 2017.

The mothers of two victims filed complaints accusing Spoto of having inappropriate sexual contact with their sons, but none of the complaints were investigated at the time because the victim either did not want to file a complaint or did not report the abuse, according to a probable cause affidavit.

An investigation into the earlier cases found two more adult victims, including a man who claimed Spoto sexually abused him more than 100 times over the course of two years, the affidavit said.

In most of the attacks, victims claimed that Spoto overpowered or intimidated them. He also gave the victims alcohol and showed them pornography, the indictment says.
