New details on the fatal accident that killed Vikings rookie Khyree Jackson

Rookie cornerback and Minnesota Viking Khyree Jackson died early Saturday morning in Maryland following a car accident.

The Minnesota Vikings confirmed the report in a statement released Saturday morning.

Maryland State Police said they were called to the fatal crash in Upper Marlboro around 3:14 a.m. Saturday, where three vehicles were involved in a fatal crash: a silver Infinity Q50, a silver Chevrolet Impala and a maroon Dodge Charger.

According to state police, Jackson was a passenger in the Dodge Charger, sitting next to the driver and another passenger in the back seat.

According to Maryland State Police, their preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of the silver Infiniti was traveling north on Route 4 when he attempted to change lanes at a high rate of speed.

According to police, the vehicle then crashed into the Charger and then into the Impala. As a result of the collision, the Charger veered off the right side of the road and struck several tree stumps, where it came to a stop.

The occupants of the Impala and Infinity were uninjured, but the three occupants of the Charger were not. Jackson and the driver were pronounced dead at the scene, while the second passenger was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

State police said alcohol may have played a role in the accident.

Later Saturday morning, the Viking organization informed fans of the incident and sent their condolences to Khyree’s family, friends, teammates and coaches.

“We are devastated by the news of Khyree Jackson’s death following a car crash overnight. While we work to gather more information, we have spoken with Khyree’s family and offered the support of the Minnesota Vikings. We have also shared the news with Vikings players, coaches and staff and offered counseling for those needing emotional support. Our thoughts are with Khyree’s family, friends, teammates and coaches, as well as all the victims of this tragic accident.”

Jackson began his college career from humble beginnings, playing his first two years in community college, first at Fort Scott Community College in 2019 and then transferring to East Mississippi Community College in 2020.

Jackson played at Alabama in 2021 and 2022 before transferring to Oregon, where he finished his college career. There, Jackson was a first-team All-Pac-12 Conference cornerback and started 12 games for the Ducks.

The 24-year-old was selected by the Vikings as a fourth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

“I am absolutely devastated by this news. Khyree brought a contagious energy to our facility and team. His confidence and engaging personality immediately attracted his teammates. In our short time together, it was clear that Khyree would develop into a great professional football player, but even more impressive was his desire to become the best person he could be for his family and those around him. I am at a loss for words. My condolences go out to Khyree’s family, friends, teammates and coaches.”

Other fatalities in the accident were 23-year-old Isaiah Hazel and 24-year-old Anthony Lytton.
