Coroner: Man dies after setting off fireworks on his head

DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCBD) – The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office reported a fatal fireworks accident in a Summerville neighborhood Thursday evening

Officers arrived at the 100 block of Cottonwood Drive in the Crestwood Subdivision at approximately 10:23 p.m.


Upon arrival, officers found a man suffering from serious injuries lying on the roadway of Cotton Drive.

Deputies said witnesses attributed the injuries to an accident involving fireworks.

The Dorchester County Coroner’s Office has identified 41-year-old Allen Ray McGrew as the person killed in the fireworks incident.

According to Paul J. Brouthers of Dorchester County Corner, McGrew lit a large firework in the street and placed it on his head. The firework exploded on his head, causing severe head injuries.

According to officials, McGrew was pronounced dead at the scene by the coroner at 11:30 p.m.

Detectives and forensic investigators are currently investigating the incident.
