Arroyo Grande Police warn public against drunk driving ahead of July 4th

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. – Arroyo Grande police have warned the public about the dangers of drunk driving ahead of this year’s Fourth of July holiday.

Below you will find a press release announcing this:

Arroyo Grande Police remind motorists to be the true heroes of the evening by prioritizing the safety of all road users on the Fourth of July. Plan ahead and celebrate the holiday responsibly.

From Monday, July 1, through Sunday, July 7, the Arroyo Grande Police Department will have additional officers on patrol to look for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

In 2022, 487 people died in crashes nationwide during the Fourth of July holiday. Alcohol was involved in 40% of those fatal crashes. In California, 68 people died in crashes during the Independence Day holiday last year. In addition, California Highway Patrol officers made nearly 1,224 arrests for driving under the influence—an average of one arrest for driving under the influence every five minutes.

“Choosing a sober driver isn’t just about following the law; it’s about saving lives,” said Police Chief Michael Martinez. “If you’re planning on celebrating the Fourth of July with a drink, we want you to make a plan to get home safely and sober. Think of your loved ones, friends and family before you get behind the wheel.”

While alcohol may be involved at some celebrations, driving under the influence of prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, and marijuana also include impairment. Do your research and educate yourself on how certain drugs can affect your ability to drive.

If you invite friends and family over for a barbecue and fireworks display, offer sober drivers non-alcoholic beverages and be aware of who is drinking. If you see people who have been drinking leaving the house, offer to stay the night or arrange a sober ride home for them.

If you see someone who appears to be impaired or driving recklessly, call 9-1-1.

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
