The first monsoon storm warning was issued on Sunday

PHOENIX (AZFamily) —Today is a First Alert weather day across Arizona. Severe thunderstorms and dust drifts will impact parts of the state as monsoon activity increases.

A strong monsoon is expected across Arizona on Sunday, and valley residents were awakened by strong winds following storms that moved in to the south overnight.

The morning hours will be mostly cloudy to partly sunny, in the afternoon the clouds will clear and the sky will be mostly sunny. Look forward to a hot day with maximum temperatures of 40 degrees.

Storms will begin in northern and eastern Arizona around noon today. Storms are also likely in southern Arizona, hitting the valley late today. The most likely impacts from the storm will initially be strong outflow winds from the south and southeast. There is a good chance this will bring blowing dust and possibly a large dust storm tonight in the valley.

The chance of storms in the valley will also increase by this evening. There is a 40 percent chance of storms in the valley tonight and overnight into tomorrow morning. Heavy rain and strong winds are possible with any storm that develops today.

Storm chances in the Valley will continue Monday through Wednesday of this week before decreasing for the Fourth of July and the following weekend. The holiday is expected to be mostly sunny and hot in the Valley, with a high temperature forecast to reach 40 degrees.
