Mother accused of murdering her teenage son is found dead after weeks on the run

An Alabama mother accused of murdering her 13-year-old son was found dead after being on the run for weeks.

On June 7, Birmingham police said they had obtained an arrest warrant for Serena Starkey and charged her with murder following the death of her son Aston, who had Down syndrome, on March 2.

An autopsy revealed that Aston died as a result of malnutrition, dehydration and neglect, Birmingham police said. The coroner classified the death as a homicide.

Nearly three weeks after the warrant was issued for her arrest, Starkey was found dead in Texas, Birmingham police said after being notified by local authorities.

There is no suspicion of foul play in Starkey’s death.

AL.com had previously reported that Starkey and her son had moved frequently. Aston was born in Florida, but the couple had lived in Birmingham the year before his death.
