Buckingham Fountain reopens after vandalism – NBC Chicago

Chicago’s Buckingham Fountain has been turned back on after the city was forced to close the famous attraction on Saturday due to vandalism.

According to an update from the Chicago Park District Sunday morning, the fountain has been turned back on and is operational after a one-day closure.

According to officials, the vandalism occurred on Friday night. The water in the fountain was dyed red and several messages were sprayed on the ground around the fountain, including “Gaza is bleeding” and “Stop the genocide,” referring to the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.

The water was diverted from the well into Lake Michigan, where it briefly colored the water near the shore red before evaporating.

The vandalism occurred on the same day as pro-Palestinian demonstrations in the Loop, during which 11 people were arrested, but it is still unknown who is behind the incident.
