Marion County horse-drawn carriage crashes into train; teenager killed

A CSX spokesman said the accident occurred as the train passed through the railroad crossing near the intersection of Marion-Hardin Road and County Road 22 in La Rue.

MARION, Ohio – A 14-year-old boy was killed Wednesday night in Marion County when the horse-drawn carriage he was driving struck the side of a train, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

According to OSHP, the accident occurred around 4:40 p.m. on County Road 5.

Edward Gingerich of Marion was driving a horse-drawn carriage north on County Road 5 when he lost control, OSHP said.

At the same time, a CSX locomotive was traveling eastbound when the car struck the side of the train, ejecting Gingerich.

A CSX spokesman said the accident occurred as the train passed through the railroad crossing near the intersection of Marion-Hardin Road and County Road 22 in the town of La Rue.

First responders pronounced Gingerich dead at the scene of the accident.

A CSX spokesperson gave the following statement to 10TV:

“CSX extends its deepest condolences to everyone affected by this tragedy and we will remain on site assisting local law enforcement with their ongoing investigation.”

The crash remains under investigation.
