DNA links 2022 sexual assault case to HIV-positive man who has faced multiple charges

Authorities say a man who was jailed in February and charged with multiple sexual assaults is also responsible for another attack in 2022.

Carlton Tambaoga, 25, was arrested after a sexual assault victim who was being treated at a hospital on Feb. 11 reported the attack, Carrollton police said. Tambaoga was released the following day after posting $20,000 bail. According to police, he was arrested a few days later after a second person reported that he had sexually assaulted him.

In a news release Tuesday, Denton police said they had issued a new arrest warrant for Tambaoga after matching his DNA to evidence from a 2022 sexual assault case.

The Carrollton Police Department had said Tambaoga tested positive for HIV. At that point, police said they had contacted at least four other people who were sexually assaulted and had contact with Tambaoga.

“Investigative findings indicate that the suspect may have sexually abused additional victims in the DFW Metroplex, Houston, Texas, and Atlanta, Georgia, who have not yet come forward,” Carrollton police said in February.

As of Tuesday afternoon, six sexual assault charges were filed against Tambaoga, who has been in the Denton County Jail since February, one of those charges involving a child, jail records show. According to online jail records, the date of offense for these charges was between July 2022 and February 2024.
