INDIANAPOLIS (WJW) – An Indianapolis Star sportswriter named Gregg Doyel “will not be covering Indiana Fever,” the newspaper said in a statement Tuesday after Doyel used a recent press conference to promote the No. 1 draft pick of the Indiana State University Welcome teams. Caitlin Clark, with a “heart” hand gesture and a verbal exchange that was widely criticized.

Bob Kravitz, who writes sports articles for IndyStar and The Athletic, reported Tuesday that Doyel is serving a two-week suspension for his actions.

Doyel used the meet-and-greet press conference in Indianapolis to ask Clark his first questions, making a “heart” symbol with his hands, a gesture toward the basketball star as a nod to the heart hand sign she her family often asks for games.

Clark responded to Doyel’s hand-heart gesture by saying, “Do you like that?”

“I like that you are here. “I like that you’re here,” Doyel said.

Doyel ended the exchange by saying, “Okay, well listen, start doing it to me (heart gesture) and we’ll get along fine.”

Numerous people appeared on social media calling the author’s jokes “awkward,” among other things.

Doyel later responded to his behavior with an apology, writing that it was “creepy” to welcome Clark to Indianapolis in this way.

Clark and the WNBA’s Indianapolis Fever begin their regular season on May 14 with a road game against the Connecticut Sun.
