Severe weather is possible in the Philadelphia area on Memorial Day. When can we expect rain and wind?

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Although both Saturday and Sunday of the holiday weekend were less than perfect, with a few showers and a thunderstorm or two, most areas in and around Philadelphia had a chance to enjoy summery temperatures and a decent amount of sunshine. With an approaching front, that will change on Memorial Day, as a NEXT weather advisory is issued for the entire region for Monday.

NEXT Weather Warning Day

Here’s the situation: A warm front moved further north overnight, bringing scattered showers Monday morning. This helped to clear the persistent fog that plagued the Jersey Shore for much of Sunday.

The region will see a little less precipitation starting late morning through early afternoon. Highs will be in the 70s to 80s throughout the region, reaching as high as 80 degrees in Philadelphia. There might even be a glimpse of sunshine or two, but that won’t last long.

A few scattered showers could still occur by midday, but the main event is a line of rain showers and a storm front that will approach the area in the afternoon and early evening. The timing will vary a bit, but around 1 p.m. this storm system will reach the Lehigh Valley. The storm front will move away from the coast between 6 and 7 p.m., so the hours between those two days are expected to be quite rainy and stormy.

Philadelphia is expected to be hardest hit between 2 and 5 p.m., while Jersey Shore and Delaware will be hardest hit between 3 and 6 p.m.

Time of the storm

Right now, heavy rain and the possibility of flash flooding are the main concerns with these storms, along with wind gusts that can reach over 60 mph. The tornado threat is low, but not zero, so we’re looking for an isolated tornado, and some spots could see hail from this storm.

The skies will clear up until late Monday night and early Tuesday and we have the best conditions for a very nice, sunny and seasonable Tuesday.

Have a plan B for Memorial Day – something indoors, because you’ll need to seek shelter quickly if a storm moves in. And of course, keep CBS News Philadelphia nearby, because the entire Next Weather team will be covering you and keeping you up to date on the storms.
