One person killed, three others in hospital after pickup truck crash, SC police say

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, one person was killed in a traffic accident on Saturday and three others had to be hospitalized.

The collision between the two vehicles occurred around 2 p.m. in Lexington County, said Lance Cpl. Lena Butler.

According to Butler, a 2003 Ford F-150 pickup truck was traveling west on US 178 when it collided with another Ford F-150 (1997 model) traveling south on DE Clark Road in the Pelion area.

A passenger in the 2003 pickup died at the scene of the accident, Butler said.

The identity of this passenger has not been publicly released by the Lexington County Coroner’s Office.

Both the driver of the 2003 pickup truck and the driver and a passenger of the 1997 truck were injured and taken to an area hospital, Butler said. Further information on their condition was not available.

There was no information on whether the people involved in the accident were wearing seat belts.

Information on what caused the pickups to collide was not available, but Butler said the Highway Patrol continues to investigate the accident.

According to the state Department of Public Safety, 357 people have died on South Carolina roads through Wednesday in 2024. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, the department reported.

According to DPS data, at least 23 people died in crashes in Lexington County in 2024. In 2023, 45 deaths were reported in the county, DPS said.
