Atlanta Braves News: Atlanta splits doubleheader with San Diego, Travis D’Arnaud returns to lineup, more

Despite a poor inning of relief from Atlanta’s best reliever so far this season, Monday was a necessary positive day. Yes, the Braves lost the first game of the doubleheader despite another great start from Reynaldo Lopez and an offense showing life. But they bounced back to win the second game of the day behind another dominant outing from Chris Sale.

In addition to sharing the day’s results, Ronald Acuna Jr., Matt Olson and Marcell Ozuna each had excellent days at the plate. Travis D’arnaud returned to the lineup. And as mentioned above, Lopez and Sale continued their All-Star worthy campaigns. As the Braves enter a slightly easier part of the schedule to finish out the month of May, Monday was a very good start to the week. If Atlanta can maintain some of that momentum as it hits the road, wins should become routine again.

The Braves made several lineup changes throughout the day. Between Games 1 and 2, Darius Vines was recalled to Atlanta while Bryce Elder was traded to Gwinnett.

Ray Kerr was also sent to Gwinnett. Kerr’s usage will be interesting to monitor in the coming days after Brian Snitker’s suggestion that he could be considered as a starter. The AJC’s Justin Toscano had more on Kerr’s move.

Travis D’Arnaud was back in the Braves lineup.

Drake Baldwin ended the weekend on a pretty powerful note on the farm.

Gabe Burns notes that Sale now has a 20-inning scoreless streak, proving how dominant he was in May.

Burns also breaks down the latest news with David Fletcher. As first reported by ESPN, MLB has officially opened an investigation into gambling allegations involving Fletcher.

Chris Sale mentioned to Mark Bowman and mlb.com that one of the reasons for his recent excellence is how comfortable he feels with the Braves.

Marcell Ozuna was fifth in an “MVP Poll” article published by mlb.com. The article spoke with league executives regarding the MVP race in each league.
