Building fire under investigation | News, sports, jobs

A Jamestown Fire Department ladder truck is pictured Sunday in front of a home at 59 Tower St., Jamestown.

A fire destroyed a home at 59 Tower St., Jamestown early Sunday morning.

Jamestown firefighters responded to the fire when it was reported at 4:58 a.m. Sunday. The fire department was on duty with two engine companies, a ladder company, an operations manager and nine firefighters. JFD was assisted by officers from the Jamestown Police Department, the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities, Alstar EMS, representatives from National Fuel and the Jamestown Development Department.

Engine Four employed a 2½-inch line with a main stream at the rear of the structure. Ladder One crews attempted to enter the front of the home, but due to the large number of firefighters, advised crews to only attack the fire from the outside of the building. Ladder One was then deployed to fight the fire from the attic and roof.

“The building was unoccupied and was slated for demolition prior to the fire,” said Crystal Surdyk, director of development at Jamestown. “My department had the rest of the building demolished because it posed a danger to the public.”

Surdyk also explained that this property had already been purchased by the Chautauqua County Land Bank before the fire and was marked for demolition.
