There is a risk of severe storms and flooding on Monday

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) –

As we begin this new work week, it’s going to be a hot week. Due to numerous disturbances in the upper levels of our region, we can expect showers until Tuesday morning. Each round could bring a fair amount of rain, and the rain could be heavy and prolonged at times…leading to major flooding risks. Areas south of I-20 are now under a flood watch through Tuesday morning as they are the most favorable areas for more than 3 inches (possibly up to 5 inches). The rest of our area may not get as much, but could still receive 1 to 3 inches.

In addition to the risk of flooding, there is also a serious risk. On the way to work on Monday morning it looks very rainy and there could be some rumbles of thunder. However, there will be a lack of instability in our area this morning, which should limit the severe potential (although an isolated severe storm cannot be ruled out). However, our biggest chance for severe storms comes from the wave of rain that hits our area late afternoon and evening Monday. After 4:00 p.m. there will be materials in our area that could withstand severe storms. Damaging wind is our biggest threat, but tornadoes and storms with hail are also possible. So go through your strict schedule and think about how you can be notified late into Monday night. Highs on Monday will be unseasonably cool due to clouds and rain-cooled air…staying in the mid to upper 70s. On Tuesday we will move past the storms and temperatures will rise back to seasonal highs in the mid 80s. Hump Day brings us more mid-80s with a mix of sun and clouds. However, more storms will roll in Thursday night into Friday as a warm front moves north. We’ll then watch the weekend for possible further isolated showers and storms. So remember to have an umbrella with you next week. Regardless of the rain, highs will remain in the 80s through the end of this week.
