According to reports, 31% of rapes in Delhi last year were committed against children

New Delhi: 31 percent of the total 3,137 rape cases in Delhi last year were committed against children, an NGO claimed.

According to a statement from the Praja Foundation, reporting of serious crimes has declined over the past five years. Reporting of rape cases decreased slightly by one percent and murder cases decreased by nine percent.

Of the 3,137 rape cases last year, 969 were registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act. The highest number of 425 rape victims were in the 16 to 18 year old age group. In 96 per cent of rape cases under POCSO, the perpetrators were known to the victim, it said.

There were no immediate comments from police.

Delhi has 13 district cyber cells, one in each district, making it relatively inaccessible and difficult to report crimes, it said.
