Longshot match 24-1 until the end in Buffalo

HAMBURG, New York – Sportsmanship (Sports editor), paying $51.50 to win, was just an afterthought in the latter part of Buffalo Speedway co-presented $9,000 harness trotting races on Friday afternoon (May 10). But the 12-year-old gelding, who never gave up, showed serious gamesmanship in the end and stunned the field with a nose-down victory over Kyuquot in a season-best time of 1:57 ,0.

Things weren’t quite as crazy in the other main event for the Sidewinders, but still surprising, as Captain Krupnik ($21.20) caused the slight upset with a half-length decision over Poets N Pirates in the best 1:58.1 of the season.

Sportsmanship (James McNeight Jr.) seemed out of action after three quarters as a wild battle brewed up front. While Kyuquot (Mike Baumeister) finally established the thinnest of leads home, Fireball (David McNeight III), Mr Ohanzee A (Joseph Chindano Jr.) and Bet On Blake (Kevin Cummings) didn’t finish and were involved in the stretch. to drive. Unfortunately for them, no one thought about Sportsmanship who was about to embark on a final quarter mile in 28.4.

In the middle of the aisle, Sportsmanship appeared and rolled toward the fence. The only question was whether he would have enough real estate to overtake Kyuquot. The photo finish answered that question, and it was yes. Kyuquot finished second, with Bet On Blake taking third.

Owned by Herman Niedhammer and trained by Thomas Mays, Sportsmanship has won three times in 13 attempts. The win brought his 2024 earnings to $16,011 and $425,414 for his lifetime.

In the other feature, Bridge Works took control of the front end and parked Magic MVP in the half in :57.4. Favorite Flo Lashomb, who was behind Magic MVP on the outside as halftime approached, jumped and was out of contention.

Meanwhile, Captain Krupnik (Conway Hall-Salt Hill Brigid) sat in the yard and passed Bridge Works (Kyle Swift) in the backstretch last time. Poets N Pirates followed, leaving these two to battle it out. Captain Krupnik (Drew Monti) managed to reach the line first as Poets N Pirates (Kevin Cummings) got away and couldn’t get within half a length.

Owned by Benjamin Ortiz and conditioned by Shawn McDonough, it was the third victory in seven starts for the 8-year-old gelding Captain Krupnik. His bankroll grew to $15,297 on the season and $286,711 over the course of his career.

The races return Saturday evening at 6 p.m. with an 11-race card game. There is a carryover of $1,361 in Pick 5 which begins in the second race.
