Sacramento police investigate man’s “death in custody”

At around 4:30 p.m., officers were called to the 3600 block of Jasmine Street in East Del Paso Heights to check the welfare of a man in his 50s.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento police said they are investigating a “death in custody” Tuesday evening.

Sergeant Dan Wiseman of the Sacramento Police Department said officers were called to the 3600 block of Jasmine Street in East Del Paso Heights around 4:30 p.m. to check on a man who was allegedly threatening to harm himself and was “possibly under the influence of narcotics.”

They say the man, in his 50s, was in the street with a knife when officers arrived. Police say he then threw the knife into the street and ran away before getting into a car parked nearby.

Police said they were able to get the man out of the car some time later “without violence,” but did not say how long he was in the car.

Some time later, officials said, he was “unresponsive,” and firefighters began treating him. The man was taken to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The investigation is ongoing and no further information is currently available.
