Man injured in accident between SUV and semi-trailer | Local news

A 90-year-old man was flown to a Youngstown hospital Monday with injuries sustained when he crashed his SUV into a semi-trailer on Route 422.

State police reported that around 9 p.m., a Subaru Outback driven by Raymond Giangiuli of New Castle was traveling eastbound and for unknown reasons traveling at a high rate of speed in the center and westbound lanes. As he attempted to merge back into the right lane, his vehicle struck the rear of a semi-trailer driven by Jannah Bell, 25, of Dillonvale, Ohio.

Giangiuli was flown to St. Elizabeth’s Youngstown Hospital with suspected serious injuries. Police said he was wearing his lap and shoulder belts at the time of the collision. Bell was not injured.

Slippery Rock Township Fire Chief Charles Peak reported the accident occurred near Young Road and the New Castle Harley-Davidson store. The semi-truck, from Sarver, Butler County, was traveling eastbound and hauling sand that spilled onto the road.

Route 422 was closed in the area for several hours and traffic was diverted to other roads while fire departments from Slippery Rock Township, Shenango Area and Scott Township assisted with the cleanup. They also assisted state police in getting everyone out of the area safely, Peak said.

Giangiuli’s SUV was a total loss. Other drivers reported he passed them in the middle eastbound lane, traveling at an estimated speed of more than 80 miles per hour, Peak said.

Police said he will be charged with lane violations. Suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty or convicted in a court of law.
