Sam Smith has spoken about a “terrible” skiing accident earlier this year which left her unable to walk for a whole month.

The Gloria singer spoke on BBC‘s Sidetracked Podcast with Annie Macmanus And Nick Grimshaw when they remembered a skiing accident in which they had suffered a serious knee injury.

“I completely tore my cruciate ligament,” said the five-time grammy The winner told the hosts: “I was an idiot and went down a black run on the second day. I was brought down in a blood bag. That was the worst.”

Sam explained that the anterior cruciate ligament in the knee “is located between the bones and helps you jump and zip around.”

“It completely tore and I chose the non-surgical route, but I couldn’t walk with that leg for a month and it was horrible,” they continued.

“It was the first time I couldn’t move and I had a bit of weight. I was very anxious. I had struggled with anxiety for years. I used it as an excuse to pull myself together.”

The “Unholy” singer then described her recovery process in detail, which included icing her knee in the morning and becoming more in tune with her circadian rhythm.

Sam’s description of the injury seems to explain why they were spotted in a New York neighborhood, a leg brace when using a walking stick in January this year.

In May, they seemed to be in much better health than Sam and her partner Christian Cowan made their first public appearance as a couple at this year’s MetGala.

In conversation with VogueFashion designer Christian revealed that he designed both his and Sam’s outfits to match the evening’s “Garden Of Time” theme, which included matching metallic roses.

“We’re both gay and British, so I thought an English rose would be perfect,” he said. “And at the beginning of our (relationship) I gave Sam a metal rose…”

Sam recently revealed to his fans that they can expect a re-recorded version of their 2014 hit “Stay With Me” with new lyrics on the 10-year anniversary edition of their legendary debut “In The Lonely Hour”.

The new version will include updated lyrics to reflect Sam’s coming out as nonbinary in 2019.
