Texas Democratic Representative Sheila Jackson Lee has died at the age of 74

Texas Representative Sheila Jackson Lee has died at the age of 74, her family announced Friday.

The Democratic congresswoman, who has represented Texas’ 18th district since 1995, only announced in June that she was battling pancreatic cancer.

“As a local, national and international humanitarian, she was recognized worldwide for her courageous fight for racial justice, criminal justice and human rights, with a particular focus on women and children,” her family said in a statement.
