Second police shooting in Milwaukee in a matter of days during a busy congressional week

The head of the city’s police union said no officers were injured.

WE DON’T. THIS IS WISN 12 NEWS WITH BREAKING NEWS AND GOOD EVENING. GOOD MORNING, EVERYONE. JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT HERE ON THURSDAY, JULY 18TH, WE BREAK THE PROGRAM WITH BREAKING NEWS FROM MILWAUKEE. WE HAVE THREE LAW ENFORCEMENT SOURCES WHO INFORMED US THAT 12 NEWS POLICE OFFICERS ARE ON THE SCENE OF ANOTHER POLICE SHOOTING. THIS ONE ON THE NORTH SIDE OF CITY. HERE IS A MAP FOR YOU SHOWING THAT LOCATION, THIS FACT THAT TAKEN PLACE AT A CITGO GAS STATION ON THE CORNER OF SHERMAN BOULEVARD AND CAPITOL DRIVE. WE SAW A VERY LARGE POLICE PRESENCE THERE. UH, AND A LOT OF ACTIVITY, A LOT OF CRIME TAPE. OUR ERICA FINK IS ON THE SCENE. SHE JUST ARRIVED A FEW MOMENTS AGO. ERICA, WE’RE JUST TAKE OUR VIEWERS THROUGH WHAT THEY SAW AND EXPERIENCED WHEN THEY ARRIVED THERE. TO THE CRIME SCENE, RIGHT? SO, DERRICK, WE’RE A FEW BLOCKS AWAY NOW AT 45TH AND CAPITOL. UH, LIKE I SAID, THAT’S JUST A FEW BLOCKS RIGHT OVER THERE. YOU SEE ALL THE CRIME SCENE TAPE. THERE’S CRIME SCENE TAPE EVERYWHERE, AS YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE. IT’S LIKE A SPIDER WEB ACROSS THE WHOLE INTERSECTION, BUT CLOSER OVER THERE, JUST TWO BLOCKS AWAY, SHERMAN AND CAPITOL ARE RIGHT THERE. RIGHT BY THAT GAS STATION, THE CITGO GAS STATION. WE SEE A WHITE VEHICLE WITH THE DRIVER’S DOOR OPEN. A LOT OF COPS IN THAT DIRECTION. SO WE SEE A LOT OF COPS IN THAT AREA. AND WE HAVE ANOTHER 12 NEWS CAMERA RIGHT ACROSS THE CITGO GAS STATION THAT HAS AN EVEN BETTER VIEW OF WHAT YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE THERE AT THE GAS STATION. WE SEE RED POLICE TAPE AROUND THE GAS STATION. OUR 12 NEWS PHOTOGRAPHER ALSO TOLD ME THAT THERE IS A VEHICLE STANDING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. IT DOESN’T LOOK LIKE A POLICE VEHICLE AT THIS POINT, AND IT ALSO APPEARS THAT THERE ARE SOME POLICE OFFICERS WHO, UHMWHERE, WHO APPEAR TO HAVE SOME EVIDENCE MARKER READY THAT THEY MAY BE ABLE TO PLACE AT THIS CRIME SCENE AS THEY CONTINUE THE INVESTIGATION. LIKE I SAID, THIS IS A HUGE CRIME SCENE. IT TOOK US A WHILE TO GET AROUND THIS ENTIRE, UHMWHERE, ENTIRE AREA. I MEAN, IT’S FROM THIS CITGO GAS STATION. IT’S PROBABLY 2 OR 3 BLOCKS IN EACH SINGLE DIRECTION THAT THE MILWAUKEE POLICE HAVE. THIS CRIME SCENE IS BARRED OFF. SO IT TOOK QUITE A LONG TIME FOR US TO ACTUALLY GET CLOSE ENOUGH TO THE CRIME SCENE TO SEE EXACTLY EVERYTHING WE NEEDED TO SEE. UHMWHERE, AS YOU CAN SEE, THERE’S QUITE A LOT OF YELLOW CRIME SCENE TAPE. THE COPS ARE JUST KEEPING LOOKING AROUND THE CRIME SCENE. OK, ERICA, AND WE HAVE A SPLIT SCREEN FOR OUR VIEWERS THAT SHOWS BOTH VIEWPOINTS FROM WHERE THEY ARE. I’M SORRY, ERICA, WHERE DOES THAT TAKE YOUR THINK? YES. YES. WE CAN ALSO SEE THE GAS STATION ACROSS THE STREET. THAT’S THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF SHERMAN AND CAPITOL. WE SEE SOME POLICE OFFICERS THERE AS WELL. UHMWHERE, WITH SOME PEOPLE WHO APPEAR TO BE SITTING ON THE GROUND. THEY JUST GET UP. IT LOOKS LIKE THERE ARE WITNESSES, UHMWHERE, PEOPLE WHO MAY HAVE SAW SOMETHING, BUT THEY’RE OVER THERE ON THE SOUTHWEST CORNER. IT’S A, IT LOOKS LIKE A CHICAGO SUB SHOP. THAT’S RIGHT ACROSS THAT CITGO GAS STATION. ALL RIGHT, ERICA, THANKS. UH, STAY READY. WE WILL COME BACK TO YOU IF NEEDED. UH, WE HAVE RECAPTURED THIS LIVE FOOTAGE HERE. THIS, UH, THIS SCENE IS AT SHERMAN AND CAPITOL. UH, THE INTERSECTION OF SHERMAN AND CAPITOL. A CITGO GAS STATION. WHERE THERE WAS A SHOOTING AT POLICE AND THE INVESTIGATION IS IN FULL SWING. I HAVE BEEN IN CONTACT WITH THE HEAD OF THE MILWAUKEE POLICE UNION, ANDREW WAGNER. HE TELLS ME THAT AS FAR AS HE UNDERSTANDS IT, ALL THE COPS ARE OK. THAT’S ALL THE MPD COPS THAT WERE INVOLVED IN THIS SHOOTING. HE SAID IT APPEARS TO HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE RNC. ANDREW WAGNER SAID IT WAS JUST ANOTHER RIDDEN INCIDENT THAT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION. OF COURSE THERE WAS A POLICE SHOOTING NEAR 14TH AND VLIET ON TUESDAY, BUT THIS IS ANOTHER ONE THAT HAPPENED JUST A LITTLE OVER 24 HOURS LATER, ON THE EVENING OF WEDNESDAY, JULY 17TH. WE ARE STILL WORKING TO GET SOME INFORMATION ON EVERYTHING THAT IS HAPPENING, AND I AM RIGHT HERE CHECKING A TEXT FROM SERGEANT EFRAIN CORNEJO. HE’S THE MILWAUKEE POLICE SPOKESMAN. I ASKED HIM ABOUT COVERAGE OF A CRITICAL INCIDENT AT THE SHERMAN CAPITOL. HE SAYS YES WE WILL HAVE A MEETING. HE DIDN’T SAY WHEN THAT MEETING WILL TAKE PLACE, AS WE UNDERSTAND IT, IF HISTORY GIVES US ANY INDICATION, IT COULD BE IN A FEW HOURS BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO DO A LOT OF EARLY AND INITIAL INVESTIGATIONS AT THESE CRIME SCENES. THEY HAVE TO TALK TO THE POLICE OFFICERS, THEY HAVE TO TALK TO WITNESSES WHO WERE AT THE CRIME SCENE. BUT WE EXPECT SOME KIND OF MEETING. UH, I WOULD IMAGINE IT LATER THIS MORNING. NO SET TIME. NOW. BUT AGAIN, IF YOU’RE JUST JOINING US: UH, WE HAVE A POLICE SHOOTING ON MILWAUKEE’S NORTH SIDE NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF SHERMAN AND CAPITOL DRIVE. AS WE UNDERSTAND IT, IT’S ALL OUT OF ORDER WITH THE HEAD OF THE POLICE UNION. THAT WAS ALL MPD POLICE OFFICERS. AS WE UNDERSTAND IT, WE WILL STAY AT THAT SCENE AND COLLECT MORE INFORMATION DURING THE NIGHT AND BRING YOU THE LATEST INFORMATION IN 12 NEWS. THIS MORNING, STARTING. AT 4:30 AM YOU SAW BREAKIN.

Second police shooting in Milwaukee in a matter of days during a busy congressional week

The head of the city’s police union said no officers were injured.

For the second day in a row, police officers in Milwaukee opened fire on a person, 12 News has learned. Late Wednesday night, police surrounded a gas station near the intersection of Sherman Boulevard and Capitol Drive. The incident was initially reported by three law enforcement sources. Andrew Wagner, president of the Milwaukee Police Association, told the reporter he understood no officers were injured. Two of the sources said the same. Wagner and two sources said all of the officers involved were from the Milwaukee Police Department. As of 12:15 a.m. Thursday, the Milwaukee County Coroner’s Office had not been called to the scene. An MPD spokesperson said officers had planned a press conference but had not yet scheduled a time. The shooting marked the second day in a row that a police shooting made headlines in the same week as the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. On Tuesday, five members of the Columbus Division of Police, who were in town to provide extra support and security at the gathering, shot and killed a man who was carrying two knives. The shooting occurred less than a mile from the RNC’s soft security zone near 14th and Vliet streets, sparking criticism and questions about why police officers from out of state were in the area. Wagner said Wednesday night’s shooting appeared unrelated to the gathering. WISN 12 News has a crew on the scene and this article will be updated overnight.
