Possible lightning strikes possible cause of two fires and electrical accidents in Norfolk

On Wednesday afternoon, Norfolk Fire-Rescue responded to reports of two possible lightning strikes at 9th Bay Street and West 36th Street.

NORFOLK, Virginia – Norfolk firefighters responded to reports of two possible lightning strikes that may have caused fire and electrical hazards.

The first incident occurred in the 1000 block of West 36th Street. Norfolk Fire Department said when they were dispatched to the scene at 4:55 p.m., they found the attic and second-floor apartment engulfed in flames.

At around 6:15 p.m. the fire brigade managed to bring the fire under control.

The fire left seven adults, a child, a cat and a dog homeless. The American Red Cross is helping them find temporary accommodation.

The second incident involved a two-story, 10-unit apartment complex in the 9600 block of 9th Bay Street in the Oceanview neighborhood.

According to fire officials, when they investigated the incident at 5:27 p.m., there was no fire in the complex. However, they found minor electrical issues and smoke that affected power to the entire complex. Dominion Power was later called to restore power.

About an hour later, at 6:28 p.m., firefighters managed to bring the electrical hazards completely under control.

Two firefighters were transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation of potential, non-life-threatening heat-related injuries.

The firefighters have not yet been able to determine how many residents or pets needed the help of the Red Cross.

Both crime scenes are currently being investigated.
