Terrell Davis’ wife Tamiko in tears over United flight incident

Terrell Davis and his wife Tamiko Nash are talking about the former Denver Broncos running back being handcuffed in front of their children on a recent United flight.

Davis first recalled the details of the July 13 incident in a statement posted on Instagram, in which he claimed he was wrongfully removed from the plane after a flight attendant accused the NFL star of hitting him. Davis says he lightly tapped the crew member on the back to ask for a cup of ice cream for his son.

While Davis and his wife discussed the incident during a July 17 performance at Good morning AmericaNash became visibly emotional as she remembered the impact this had on her children.

She reports that police officers, including the FBI, approached her husband while he was “still sitting” and immediately handcuffed him.

“Don’t fight back,” Terrell remembers the agent saying.

Nash continues, “I thought it was a joke because what else could it be? I saw the agents coming in, so of course it caught my attention, like it did everyone else’s. And they went straight for Terrell. So I jumped out of my seat and said, ‘Wait a minute, what’s going on?’ I hopped over to the woman next to me and said to Terrell, ‘Are you kidding me?'”

She chokes back tears as she remembers looking over at her two sons, ages 13 and 11, as they watched their father being handcuffed to the aisle seat next to them. Her 9-year-old daughter sat next to Nash during the incident.

“I look at my sons sitting right next to him, watching their father being handcuffed. And what can we do? And I ask them, what’s going on? Why are they doing this?” she says. “Nobody helped me. We just had to help ourselves on the flight while everyone was staring at us.”

Davis said he was speaking out about the abuse he experienced to “bring about change” and push United to take responsibility for its actions.

“I know what happened to me and how I felt – I was demoralised, ashamed and humiliated. I felt like my dignity was taken away from me in front of my children and my family. And I want United to be held accountable,” he says.

Davis’ attorneys, Stinar Gould Grieco & Hensley, confirm to PEOPLE that United has not contacted Davis with a personal apology since his resignation. Good morning America Look.

PEOPLE has reached out to United for comment but has not yet received a response.

In Davis’ July 15 deposition, the former football star detailed the flight attendant’s shocking reaction after he asked for a cup of ice cream for his son. Davis says the United employee didn’t hear his initial request, so he “lightly tapped” the flight attendant on the back to get her attention.

The crew member reportedly then shouted “Don’t hit me” and rushed to the front of the plane. Davis says he didn’t think much of the reaction, other than thinking the employee was “rude,” until the flight landed at John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, California.

After “six FBI and law enforcement officers boarded the plane” and handcuffed him, he was interrogated and eventually released later that day.

“The staff rightly determined that this flight attendant’s allegations were inaccurate and apologized profusely and even offered to support me and my family in any way possible,” Davis added in his statement.

In a statement shared with PEOPLE on Tuesday, July 16, a United spokesperson said the airline had “reached out to Mr. Davis’ team and apologized” and confirmed that the flight attendant who accused Davis of hitting him had been fired from the service.
