3 suspects with ties to international gang of thieves used cameras to break into Braintree homes – Boston 25 News

BRAINTREE, Massachusetts – Police have arrested three suspects suspected of being part of an international gang of thieves who used hidden cameras to spy on their victims and break into their homes.

Carlos Ocampo-Carrillo, 47, of Flushing, New York, is charged with assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, carrying a dangerous weapon, two counts of conspiracy, burglary and possession of burglary tools.

Diana Maria Alvarado-Rosano, 34, of Flushing, New York, is charged with making false statements after an arrest, participating in a conspiracy and possession of burglary tools.

Lizbeth Hernandez-Gantiva, 23, of New York City, New York, is charged with conspiracy and possession of burglary tools.

All three are citizens of Colombia and may face federal immigration charges, authorities said.

A Braintree police spokesman said the trio were arrested on July 11 following an extensive investigation.

On June 20, two of the suspects allegedly spent several hours in an empty house in the Messina Woods neighborhood. Officials say their methods resembled those of an organized international gang of thieves, also known as the South American gang of thieves.

The group is known for using extensive surveillance, GPS technology, secret video feeds and counter-surveillance to determine behavioral patterns of their victims. One video shows one of the suspects crawling through an empty apartment building in Braintree.

Two weeks later, an alert neighbor found a camera hidden in the bushes across from the house where the break-in occurred, according to police. Pictures show the camera was covered with leaves to better blend in with the surroundings.

Investigators discovered that the camera had been visited by one of the suspects after the June 20 break-in, prompting police to develop a surveillance plan.

On July 11, authorities say they noticed a man dressed as a landscaper coming out of a victim’s yard and taking a “detour” toward a black Audi SUV with a Florida license plate.

Officials monitored the Audi as it left the city.

At around 10:30 p.m., the same black Audi was reportedly parked in the same area next to the Messina Woods neighborhood. A man later identified as Ocampo-Carrillo, dressed all in black, wearing a mask and carrying a backpack, exited the vehicle and hid in a stand of trees before reappearing in the victim’s yard, authorities said.

Ocampo-Carrillo was allegedly seen walking toward the hidden camera before disappearing, only to reappear ten minutes later.

Police then moved in on the vehicle where Alvarado-Rosano and Hernandez-Gantiva were sitting while pursuing Ocampo-Carrillo on foot. The two women were arrested without incident. Authorities say Ocampo-Carrillo was taken into custody after a “significant struggle.”

He refused to provide any identification and was held on bail. Later, his fingerprints were taken in jail and it was discovered that he had criminal records in both California and New York.

All three were arraigned in Quincy District Court.

“The Braintree Police Department would like to thank Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Emergency Removal Operations (Boston) for their assistance in this case,” police said in a statement.

Further information was not initially available.
