Mariners minor league player suspended for 80 games for performance-enhancing drugs

Seattle Mariners minor league pitcher Yeury Tatiz was suspended for 80 games after failing a PED test while playing for the Low-A Modesto Nuts.

The report came from Chris Correa on social media:

Major League Baseball just announced that minor league pitcher Yeury Tatiz of the @Mariners, currently with the Modesto Nuts, has been suspended 80 games without pay after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.

The 80-game mark means Tatiz will miss the rest of this season and next season should the Mariners decide to keep him in the organization.

The 23-year-old right-hander is outside the Mariners’ top 30 prospects, according to MLB.com. This season, he is 1-2 with a 3.00 ERA in 21 games, all relief appearances. In his overall minor league career, he is 11-17 with a 5.77 ERA. This is the third consecutive season he has played in Modesto.

Given this fact and the suspension now in place, it will be interesting to see if the Mariners feel Tatiz is worth keeping.

In the major leagues, the Mariners have been fortunate not to have to deal with much of this type of news. The most famous case of a Mariner player being suspended for using performance-enhancing drugs was Robinson Cano, who was suspended during the 2018 season. The following offseason, he was traded to the New York Mets in a deal that brought the Mariners Jarred Kelenic, Jay Bruce and others.

The Mariners and Angels will play again on Saturday at 6:38 p.m. PT.
