Thane: Shil-Daighar police have arrested three men, including a priest, from a religious site for allegedly raping a 30-year-old woman and pushing her to her death from a hillock near Shilphata. One of the accused was a substitute for a priest who had gone to Uttar Pradesh, a police official said. Police said the woman, who was reportedly harassed by her in-laws, frequently visited the religious site on a hillock near Shilphata. “Last Saturday, she left her residence at 6 am after an argument at home. She first visited a nearby restaurant and was seen on the CCTV camera walking towards the stairs of the religious site,” a senior police official said. However, the deceased, the mother of a toddler, was not seen descending while the three accused were present at the scene, the official said. Meanwhile, her in-laws and husband were frantically searching for her but to no avail, prompting them to file a missing person report. Police began questioning the trio, who initially gave contradictory statements but later admitted to the crime. “It is also suspected that they might have laced her hot drink with sedatives and then took turns to rape her. Then they pushed her to her death. Things will become clearer once a thorough investigation is completed,” a police official said. The accused were produced before the court and remanded in police custody.
