Police bodycam footage provides further information on the mass murder in the Short North

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Columbus police have released bodycam footage from the June 23 mass shooting in the Short North.

The video shows the chaotic moments when shots were fired in the crowd. It also shows the officers pursuing the suspects at high speed.

Columbus Police have released body camera footage from 11 officers. There are several observation points of officers who appear to have already been on special duty in the Short North area.

At 2:26am a volley of gunfire occurs and officers run towards the area. We heard at least 20 shots. According to the video, High Street was crowded when the shots were fired.

Many people can be heard shouting to Columbus police officers, “This way. He was shot,” and “You went that way.”

Several officers pursued the suspect(s) and located a white Honda Civic, identified as the suspect’s getaway car, in an alley off Fourth Street. Officers said they saw a male subject in the passenger seat.

“Hands out the window immediately,” they shout.

The person screams back.

“I’m shot, I’m shot,” he said.

The officers order the driver to stop, but he quickly drives off.

Several patrol cars pursue the suspect from Fourth Street to Summit Street and onto I-670 westbound. An officer radios that “the speed limit is about 91.”

During the chase, footage appears to show the first officer in the chase crashing into the rear of the suspect car.

“Stay with him,” the officer said.

Some officers are also unsure over the radio which direction they are going: east or west on I-670. There appears to be frustration among other officers as well. The officers lose the Honda near I-670 and Grandview Avenue.

Meanwhile, body camera footage in the Short North shows police officers assisting gunshot victims and marking a large section of the street as a crime scene.

There are casualties on High Street and High Street side streets, along a stretch of about 1/5 mile between West Fifth Avenue and West Third Avenue. Columbus police said 10 people were shot.

Based on the cartridge cases found at the crime scene, police believe that at least four shooters are involved.

Police said 19-year-old DeAngelo Fuller turned himself in a few hours after the shooting and identified himself as the driver of the getaway car.

The police are still searching for the shooters involved.

Columbus police are asking anyone with information about the shooters to call 614-645-4545. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
