On July 4, one person was killed in Yellowstone National Park following a shootout with police.

The person had a firearm and was “making threats” in the Canyon Village area, which is in the center of the park. When rangers confronted the person, they opened fire, the park said.

A park ranger was injured in the shooting and is in stable condition at a nearby hospital.

The FBI is investigating the incident with assistance from special agents from the National Park Service. A portion of the park near Canyon Lodge is cordoned off while police continue their investigation.

“There are no active threats to the public,” NPS said.

The identity of the person was not disclosed.
